The two teams had met in six previous matches, including in the 1966 FIFA World Cup group stage, won by Argentina 2–0.
The match went to extra time with Ángel di María scoring the only goal with two minutes remaining with a side-foot finish from the right of the penalty area after a run and pass fromLionel Messi. Switzerland had a chance to equalise in injury time but Blerim Džemaili headed against the post then prodded the rebound wide. Argentina advanced to the quarter-finals to face Belgium.
